LO1 Analysis of an existing graphic design work: Docfest

a). The purpose of the poster is to advertise Sheffield Docfest to a large audience. The pamflet has the same purpose as it is given out to people to directly appeal to them, these pamflets are better than flyers as they carry a lot more information than the flyers. The bags and t shirts are also a very good way of advertising as they continue to advertise for Docfest whenever the customer wears the t shirt or bag out.

b). The format of the first piece is a logo which is put on every docfest product. The second pieces format is a flyer which is handed out to people on the streets. The format of the third is merchandise that is sold at the festival.

c). There are lots of different parts of the content on both the flyer and the merchandise. The flyer has the logo in the top left corner. The designers did this so that the brand identity is clear.  Next to this logo is the date. This has been designed in a way that grabs the audiences attention. The designer did this by adding a circle that encloses the date so that it is noticeable and sticks out from the other aspects of the design. The tag line is the largest on the flyer. The designer did this to attract attention but also this could have been done for the brand identity purposes. The logo on the merchandise and the flyers are tucked into the corner which is unusual as the logo is one of the biggest pats of a brands identity, however the designer could have done this to try divert the visitors attention to the more important date and website for the festival.

d. The style of this piece is a grungy indie style. This denotes that the designer obviously thinks that Sheffield has a indie/ grunge identity. This connotes that the city of Sheffield is is a very cultured city.

e. The layout of these peices is very compact and busy. However with the bag the layout is quite simple as the layout only includes the date, tagline and logo.  This layout is quite counterproductive as this busy, compact layout makes it seem quite amateurish rather than professional.

f.The target audience for these pieces are people aged 16-25, any ethnicity and gender. This is because the bright colouring of the pieces denotes to a younger audience.

g. The pieces over all don't break any of the Advertising Standards Authorities codes of conduct however the tag line of the festival "More- Sex & Doc's & Rock 'n' Roll!" is sitting ver close to the line as it talks about controversial subjects that are referred to in the ASA's code of conduct. There is no breach of copyright as the pieces are all original pieces of work.
